  4. Headboard clearance. As the head section rises, the mattress moves up and back. A low headboard is fine; a tall one with a shelf can foul it. Wall-hugging bases reduce this.
  5. Leg height. The base legs are usually adjustable between about 3 and 12 inches. Set them so the mattress top lands where you want the finished bed height.
